Surface analysis is concerned with the study of the surface of a solid. This can be both a structural and a chemical analysis of surface properties.
Many of the analytical methods used for surface analysis have an information depth in the range of only a few nanometers up to a few microns. If more complex information about the vertical structure or chemical composition of the outer surface layers are needed, a cross section analysis or even depth profiling analysis may be advisable.
